10 Apps to help you get eco

With the ever growing presence of the iPhone and its competitors, it’s hard not to notice the plethora of Apps out there. Whether they offer advice on the latest fashion trends, help you sell your car on eBay or make communicating with your loved ones easier, you name it  you can bet your bottom dollar that there’s an app for it!

New technology is constantly pushing the boundaries, making things that seemed unthinkable, thinkable. So why not put them to the test, and see if they really can make a difference to the way we live. We’ve compiled a short list of free apps available on the iPhone that might just be the ticket to helping you reduce your carbon footprint!

1.Frugal Family

It might be an American app with costs shown in US dollars, but that doesn’t stop the ideas being innovative and plausible. Not only does it offer ways to save money in all dimensions of your life from making gifts to buying generic brands, but also gives solutions on how to be ‘greener’ too!

2.Grow your own

Ok so you might be wondering what this has got to do with ‘going green’ but think of all those air miles that a strawberry can clock up…. that’s a BIG carbon footprint for a fruit that is 80% water! So now with the help of ‘Grow  your Own’ you can spend just a few extra minutes tending to your sugar snap  peas or whatever tickles your fancy. You don’t even need a garden, and what’s more they taste even better than Mr Sainsburys!

3.Alert Me

This app gives a wide list of household appliances to help you work out how efficient they are. It can also give a good indication of how much money you can save by switching to energy efficient alternatives, or just by switching something  off at the wall! The only downside is that you have to become a member to reap the full benefits of the app, something that only costs a bit of your time!

4.Tree Hugger

Offers current news stories related to the environment, all be it rather tenuous links at times! If you are bored of reading articles, you can listen to one of their podcasts as well! And as if that wasn’t enough, it tells you where your nearest recycling haunt is!

5.Eco Cleaning

Lets you calculate your carbon footprint, something we should all be aware of. Only downside is that it doesn’t offer any helpful ideas on how to do anything about it.

6. Recycle List

Lets you choose from a vast variety of materials to recycle (and when I say vast, I don’t just mean glass and cans!!)  and then lets you know where your nearest depot it. Perfect!

7.Solais

Lets you calculate how much energy and money you could save by switching to LEDs. As an added bonus, it gives you a bit of information about the little things!!

8.Solar Saver

Quite simply helps you calculate how much you can save if you install some solar panels. Couldn’t be easier.

9.Think Green

Shake your phone to find another idea on how to be more environmentally friendly. Fairly limited ideas, and not all that realistic but the sentiment is there!

10.Finder

Helps you locate your nearest recycling group so you can play an active role in your local recycling campaign.
