The most effective way to get rid of head lice

A new strain of head lice that seem impervious to age old de-licing methods has emerged! If you think its relatively easy to get rid of these little critters with a quick dose of any old “guaranteed results” solution, you are horribly mistaken. Unfortunately its now a more arduous task with no quick fix, but there is one method that delivers results and lice free hair! This programme takes the 21 day life cycle of the little nibblers into account and works a dream.

See the trouble with this new strain is that it is has developed a resistance to current shampoos and its short life cycle lends itself to protection from eradication. Head lice lay eggs, and it is the eggs that pose the biggest problem since they are not removable by combing. It doesn’t help that many people believe they have been thorough with their combing since they see white flecks in the comb, however these are often just the skins that the louse has moulted, leaving the actual creature in tact and still on the hair! An egg will hatch around day 7 of the 21 day cycle, so once they are free and roaming this is when you need to strike, before they embark on their own reproductive life cycle at 17 days old.
The aim of the game is to remove all the current adults i.e those that are laying eggs, leaving only the unhatched. This way ensures that the stocks of eggs cannot be replenished. Since the eggs will have been laid at different times they will also hatch independently, so combing must resume to prevent new hatch-lings reaching sexual maturity and thus starting the next generation.
In order for this scheme to work you need to be strict with all members of your family, insisting that when a combing day is scheduled it does actually take place. Your only tools for extermination of the lice will be:

  • a steel lice comb NOT plastic!!
  • a large bottle of mild baby shampoo- this enables easy combing

Remember to wash the comb frequently, after just a few sweeps, under fast running water and then wipe it clean with a tissue.
This 21 day plan, if kept to will ensure that you and your family are free of head lice, and no chemicals are needed!! Supplementing combing with a non-toxic, chemical free treatment can also help too.
