Nice Day for a Green Wedding

This week, we are going green crazy.  With tips on everything from cleaning your home to dressing stylishly and organically, EcoHip is keeping you guys up-to-date with what’s hot.  Today, we tell you how to go green with EcoHip eco products for the wedding day of your dreams.

Make your wedding an Eco-Chic Day: Gone are the days of having a ‘white wedding’ and now all the young couples are demanding it’s a Green one!

Some families may not believe you can be eco and chic but here are all the answers you need for your green dream:-

-Firstly, consider this day as one to express your true self in terms of religion, environmental beliefs and your sense of style.

-There are so many ways to stay green, so start as you mean to go on – with the invitation.  You can either send e-invites or if you prefer to send your guests something in the post make it a plantable invitation. These are really special as your guest can keep the invite until the wedding and then plant it. This way they’ll grow wild flowers and it’s a lovely memory of your wedding day.  Click here to browse the full collection.

-Look beautiful in a vintage bridal gown – this will look original and keep to your green beliefs too. Some of these antique materials, beading and design beat anything you might find in the shops today. There are many places filled with such treasures in Portabello, London. It’s also worth checking out online too. I gave my wedding dress (which I had made from organic material) to a charity that lends it to brides who can’t afford to buy a dress.

If Vintage is not your look you could have a dress made of organic materials or hire one. This is becoming a really popular option as the dress really is just for the day, unless you get it dyed and wear it as an evening dress!

Sorry I nearly forgot to mention the Groom, well you can justify buying a suit if you’ll wear it in the future. Again try and go for a suit made with organic materials or a fabric that does not create too much waste or damage! However, you too could hire your suit if you don’t think you’ll wear it again.

-Rings are another personal decision. I opted for a vintage wedding band from Grays Antique Market in London but you can stay green and sentimental by either wearing a family heirloom, buying an antique ring or if you want a modern one buy it from someone who has sourced ethically!  According to the website No Dirty Gold, gold mining is one of the dirtiest businesses in the world. The production of one simple gold ring results in tons of mine waste. If you even considered a diamond in your ring you must read Blood Diamonds: Every Bride’s Best Friend.

But if you’re still set on a new ring, look at the eco-friendly alternatives; ApolloRings (man made alternative to diamonds), Cred Jewellery specialises in fair trade gold wedding rings and diamond engagement rings that are from certified community mines. GreenKarat specialises in ecologically responsible jewellery.

-When it comes to the catering just make sure that the food is produced locally, not imported. If possible buy organic food and drink from one supplier so there is no waste on transport either.

-Transport is another big issue – I personally wouldn’t take the chance of walking on my wedding day especially with English weather and high heels!

However if you know the weather is going to be good a horse-drawn carriage is the ultimate in romance and fairytale as well as being green too. But if you don’t want to take your chances and want the security of a car choose a hybrid.

You can also save on transport and hold your ceremony and reception at the same venue or within walking distance of each other. If this isn’t possible, bus everyone from the ceremony to the reception.

– When it comes to your honeymoon, you’ll have to agree or disagree on the transport you take or don’t take!!!

Staying in England is the greenest option and could be very relaxing too – no stress of airports, jet lag etc

There really are some luxurious, fun and quirky places in England, so try a small family hotel to help the local economy and stay away from chain hotels. These boutique hotels often have organic restaurants and usually source the food locally.

However, if you can’t resist flying to your dream destination stay as long as possible and neutralise your air miles by buying credits from the Carbon Neutral Company. Avoid travelling with a multinational operator or staying in western-owned all-inclusive resorts.

Remember your wedding day is all about the bride and groom (but remember the rest of the world too!) Just let the memories last forever not the waste and damage you created on your special day.

Wishing all brides and grooms a happy green wedding day!
